Red Sauce Pasta

A classic Italian dish of pasta in a tomato-based sauce.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 pound pasta
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 onion chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 2 28-ounce cans crushed tomatoes
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions
 

  • Cook the pasta according to package directions.
  • While the pasta is cooking, heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
  • Add the garlic, oregano, and red pepper flakes and cook for 1 minute more.
  • Add the crushed tomatoes and bring to a simmer. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 15 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened.
  • Season the sauce with salt and pepper to taste.
  • Drain the pasta and add it to the sauce. Toss to combine.
  • Sprinkle the Parmesan cheese over the pasta and serve.

Notes

For a richer sauce, you can add a splash of heavy cream or milk.
If you don’t have any dried oregano, you can use 1 tablespoon of fresh oregano leaves.
If you want a spicier sauce, you can add more red pepper flakes.
You can also add other vegetables to the sauce, such as mushrooms, peppers, or zucchini.
Serve the pasta with a side of crusty bread or a salad.
